RED SILK

DIRECTED BY GEOFFREY LEEDER

A play written by Lois Achimovich, Red Silk is about an incident in the life of Anne Sexton, the controversial poet and proto-feminist. Lois has steeped herself in Sexton’s poetry and her extraordinary journey through psychiatric treatment. It started as a one-hander but grew into a drama of her family, her treatment and her views on contemporary life, resonances of which ring true in this present day.

Anne Sexton was a famous US poet in the 60’s. Her “confessional” poetry shocked her contemporaries, tackling issues of suicide, menstruation, menopause, madness and incest. She was a friend of Sylvia Plath and the lover of many famous poets. Anne was treated by two psychiatrists, Martin and Ted. The three met one day at Martin’s office at his request. Anne described it as “a nice, collegial discussion” where they congratulated each other on how well they treated her. Red silk is a fictional account of what might have happened in that office…

Red silk originally opened at the Blue Room Theatre in March 2012. We are delighted to be introducing this piece of theatre to a new audience here at Koorliny in 2025.
